Yin "Cooling Energy" - Yoga Asana and Foods.

5/8/2012

Picture
Aloha,
Today I would like to talk about Medicinal Nutrition using Yin “cooling foods” a Chinese food method, Yin in the lower back, and demonstrate yoga poses that help benefit. One belief system of Chinese Medicine and the Tao is that there is a balance of energy in the universe, body of self, and it is that certain foods have a "hot" or heat inducing quality while others have a "cold" or chilling effect on the body. This does affect one’s organs or "energy" levels. A healthy person should have a balance of Yang and Yin foods, as well as neutral foods. The idea being that an imbalance of natural "heat/yang” and "cold/yin" in a one’s body can cause disease or be a weak immune body. Although, in this belief system, it does not necessarily mean one's internal "heat" or "cold" balance is directly related to being physically hot such as sweating or even cold such as getting the “chills” or Goose bumps”. If you were “under the weather” and possibly ill or felt as about to get a cold, you would not want to eat any "yin" foods such as a lemon, melon or cucumber. If you were running "hot" or had inflamed disease, like Eczema, then you do not want to eat "yang" foods such as garlic, onions, or chocolate. This leaves the "yang" energy to be increased and the disease is worsened. Indeed, it is thought by some that these "hot" or "cold" properties of foods are so intense that merely the eating of too many of one or another can actually cause diseases, inflammation, laziness, and lower back pain. For example, ever eat to much shell fish and wind up with a rash? Imagine that time you were eating too many slice’s of that water melon on a hot summer’s day. Too much yin food can lead to stomach pain or diarrhea. It’s quite wonderful to have the perspective and below I am introducing a list of foods for the vital energy flow and some yoga pose to help benefit that lower back. Be good to yourself and listen.
Namaste.

Yin Yoga demonstration by Esther Ekhart
Picture
Yin yoga is a beautiful practice that involves holding poses for several minutes at a time to gently stress the connective tissue, ligaments, and fascia.  This creates, facilitates, and maintains range of motion in the joints, especially the back, lower back, groin, and hips. It is a wonderful complement to "yang" exercises such as my favorite Asthanga yoga, and also Vinyasa or Hatha yoga. Also to include “yang” generators, weight training, cardio, and great sex!  These strengthen muscles to stabilize the joints. It also works under the same principles of acupuncture by stimulating various energy lines in the body.

Yin foods that cool the body.
Picture
The clash of "yin" entering a "yang" body.
Yin foods that cool the body. Yin foods are cooling, calming, and nourishing. Yin foods are recommended for Yin deficient and Yang excess imbalance. Avoid some strongly yin foods, such as sugars, alcohol, and coffee. During the day and depending on season, when the temperature outside is more yang (hot) or verse yin (cool), you want to eat more yin (cooling foods) or yah (heating foods). Create an internal harmonious atmosphere with the immune body. Your mid-day meal, or lunch, should consist of salads and fruits on a hot day. Remember ending consumption of fruits before 2pm.  Unless you are rather close to the equator. Bon Appétit!

Yin foods (cool):

alfalfa sprouts, apple, apricot, Asian pear, asparagus, bamboo, bamboo shoots, barley, pearl, bok choy, broccoli, burdock root (gobo), carrot, cauliflower, celery, Chinese cabbage, cucumber, daikon radish, dandelion root, dandelion greens, eggplant, endive, lotus root, millet, pearl barley, potato, pumpkin, Romaine lettuce, soy bean sprouts, spinach, squash, turnip, watercress, wheat(please don’t),zucchini

Gobo aka:Burdock Root
yin meats (not recommended): chicken eggs, clam, crab, pork,

Strongly yin foods:

alcohol, beer, ale, coffee, refined sugars (not recommended). banana, cantaloupe, Chinese cucumber, seaweed, tea, water chestnut.

Preferably I would consume fermented seaweed since it is highest of yin while it allows you protection from the Fukishima fallout. It’s the only thing that can help with that. So two birds one stone.

Sprouts - Conscious Eating, Conscious Living!

SPROUTS
the greatness of medicinal nutrition
Picture
Aloha,
Sprouts are rich sources of vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, chlorophyll and protein. They are low calorie and contain little or no fat. The fat they do contain is the healthy fat that your body needs. When broken down in digestion they leave little or no purification, expelling  parasites. Being one of the most nutritious foods that exist, they make a great addition to any healthy eating plan. I use them in salads, sandwiches, wraps, sushi rolls, soups and raw vegan stir fried vegetables. Enjoy these nutrient-packed delicacies as a snack all by themselves or added as a garnish to a main dish. Eating them raw is one of the most abundant ways to receive raw vital nutrients.

Sprouting magnifies the nutritional value of the seed. You are now activating a living organism and at the time of birth is the greatest amount of energy that that one organism will ever contain. We see the reflection in our birth. At the time of conception is of the greatest amount of energy and potential a life being has. We are created by many things cells, minerals, bacteria, fat, proteins, but the chromosomes, these are radio frequency receivers that transmit and receive information to cells to and from the withstanding environment creating order, harmonization and command throughout the body on a multi-cellular level. This does not restrict or adhere to only one dimension. Just throwing that in there, but these chromosomes are rapidly depleted just as if cutting an apple and exposing it to oxygen. Hence oxygen, think terms of oxidization and anti-oxidants. Its quiet a powerful molecule. But from the second of conception you are naturally dying. Can you draw in a picture? It’s called aging. By the time you are born you spent ½ of your life capacity, but you were the size of a pencil tip and now a living universe. You are conceived at a count of 30,000 chromosomes (telomore) and by birth contain 15,000, by the age 30 you have about 5,000 left. Sprouts too are the same in retrospect. That tiny sprout will grow into a massive tree or bush and produce hundreds or thousands of counts of potential life bearers. If you can imagine capturing that organism at the potential of life before it had grown and expended all that energy creating fruit and thriving for so long and you were to eat it at a sprout age (highest potential). You then receive all the benefits. You can understand the importance and magnificence in eating sprouts. By sprouting  the seed it boosts the B-vitamin content, triples the amount of vitamin A and increases vitamin C by a factor of 5X - 6X. How about controlling the amount of chlorophyll they contain by sticking them in and out of the sunlight and being able to consume them. Starches are converted to simple sugars, making sprouts very easily digestible. You can have them fresh all year round, even when fresh vegetables are hard to find. It's easier than planting a garden outside and they're ready much quicker. You can even grow them when the ground outside is frozen solid. And the best part is that you can grow the freshest, tastiest sprouts right in the comfort of your own kitchen. It takes less than 2 minutes a day and they are ready in 3 to 7 days, depending on the variety.

You can sprout seeds, beans, grains and nuts. Some of the most popular varieties are alfalfa, broccoli, red clover, radish, mung beans, lentils, garbanzo beans and peas.

Alfalfa sprouts are what people typically think of when you mention sprouts. They are the ones you commonly see at a salad bar. Rich in phytochemicals, they protect against cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis and fibrocystic breast disease. They stimulate natural killer cell activity, which strengthens the immune system. Ladies, they are your new favorite. They are beneficial in reducing symptoms of PMS and menopause, including hot flashes. Sprouts contain high concentrations of antioxidants, the body's defense against the destruction of DNA which is the cause of aging. They allow the chromosomes to remain whole and keep their natural integrity and defense. This is where you see the movement in the health industry about anti aging and slowing or neutralizing the aging process. If you wanna know more without spending so much on all those products and other peoples methods. Ask me how. Here is one example. The benefits of reading this article and the many others I will publish.

Picture

Alfalfa sprouts are abundant sources of vitamins A, B, C, E and K, the minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. Also carotene, chlorophyll, amino acids and trace elements. They contain 35% protein. One pound of alfalfa seed produces 10-14 pounds of sprouts.

Picture
Broccoli sprouts have just recently become popular after it was discovered that they abound with the amazing cancer-fighting phytochemical, sulforaphane. Research studies have shown that they contain 50 times more sulforpohane than fresh broccoli. What's more, they contain glucosinolates and isothiocyanates, substances that protect cells from becoming malignant, at 10-100 times greater levels than in fresh broccoli. In additon, they are sources of plant estrogens, similar to human estrogen, and so are helpful in cases of PMS, menopause, hot flashes and fibrocystic disease. Nutrient dense, they are rich sources of vitamins A, B, C, E and K, anti-oxidants, the minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. Also carotene, chlorophyll, amino acids, trace elements and antioxidants. Broccoli sprouts contain as much as 35% protein.

Picture

Garbanzo beans, also known as chickpeas, can be sprouted to make delightfully delicious hummus. It is much richer in nutrients than hummus typically made from cooked chickpeas. They can also be used in salads, soups or stir fried or steamed with other bean sprouts and vegetables. These sprouts are plentiful sources of vitamins A, C and E, the minerals iron, calcium, magnesium and amino acids. They contain 20% protein.

Picture

Pea sprouts are delicious raw or cooked. They can be sprinkled on salads and added to soups. In addition, they can be steamed or stir fried with other bean sprouts and vegetables. They are rich sources of vitamins A, B, C and E, all the essential amino acids, the minerals calcium, iron and phosphorus. They contain 26% protein.

Picture

Lentil sprouts, like pea sprouts, are very tasty and can be eaten raw or cooked. Add them to salads, soups, casseroles or steam or stir fry them with other vegetables. Rich in vitamins A, B, C and E, the minerals iron, calcium and phosphorus. They contain 26% protein.

Picture

Mung bean sprouts are the ones you typically see in Oriental cooking. Mung beans should be sprouted in the dark to avoid a bitter flavor. They are ready when they are 1.5 to 2 inches long. Abundant in vitamins A, B, C and E, the minerals iron, potassium, calcium and magnesium, and amino acids, they contain 20% protein.

Picture

Radish sprouts taste just like radishes. They are great on sandwiches or in salads. Their high concentrations of phytochemicals help protect against disease. And because of their naturally occurring plant estrogens, similar to human estrogen, they are helpful with PMS, menopause, hot flashes and fibrocystic disease. These baby green vegetables are rich sources of vitamins A, B, C, E and K, the minerals potassium, calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium and zinc. In addition, they also contain carotene, chlorophyll, amino acids, trace elements, and antioxidants. They have a 26% protein content.

Picture
Red clover sprouts look like alfalfa sprouts and have a mild, sweet flavor. Rich in phytochemicals, in particular genistein, which is known to prevent the formation of new blood vessels inside a tumor, in essence starving the tumor, it is protective against cancer. The naturally occurring plant estrogens, similar to human estrogen, help with PMS, menopause, hot flashes and fibrocystic disease, contraindicated with tamoxifen treatment. Ask your physician if using treatment before using sprouts. They contain vitamins A, B, C, E and K, the minerals calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, phosphorus. zinc, trace minerals, carotene, chlorophyll and amino acids. They contain 26% protein.

How to Grow Your Own Sprouts
Sprouts are easy to grow and take a minimum of effort. You probably already have everything you need to start your own kitchen garden.
To grow sprouts in jars on your kitchen sink, you will need:

1. a wide-mouth jar
2. screen or netting
3. a rubber band
4. a bowl to drain the jar
5. fresh water
6. sprouting seeds

Organically grown sprouting seeds are preferable. Seeds that are not specifically sprouting seeds and are not organic may be chemically treated with pesticides and those chemicals will end up in your sprouts. Also pay attention to GMO. We are using living foods and there are some factors you must consider. Especially cleanse-ness of things, there are bacterium to consider and a jar with culture.
2 oz. of seeds will yield 1-2 pounds of sprouts, and 8 ounces of beans will yield 1 pound of sprouts. Your indoor garden will grow best when the temperature is between 65F and 75F (18C and 25C). Try keeping it at 71F - 72F, 22C - 23C for best results. Seed sprouts, like alfalfa or red clover are 1" (2.5 cm) to 2" (5 cm) long when ready. Bean sprouts, like lentils or peas are 1/4" (.5 cm) to 1/2" (1 cm) long when ready. These are more tender when small. Mung beans are 1" (2.5 cm) to 2" (5 cm) long when ready. They are best grown in the dark to prevent bitterness. They should be rinsed 3 to 4 times a day. Taste the sprouts as they are growing to see when you like them best.

Step 1.

Put 1 to 2 Tbsp. of seeds or 3 to 4 Tbsp. of beans in a wide mouth jar.

Step 2.
Cover with netting or cheescloth and secure with a rubber band.

Step 3.
Rinse a couple times, then fill the jar 3/4 full with pure water, room temperature, and soak 6-8 hours or overnight.

Picture
Step 4.
Drain soak water. Rinse 2 or 3 times in cool water.

Step 5.
Invert jar and prop at angle in sink or bowl to drain.

Step 6.
Rinse 2 or 3 times twice a day in cool water.

Step 7.
Place sprouting jar in bright light, but not direct sunlight, last sprouting day to allow chlorophyll to form.

Step 8.
Enjoy In three to seven days. Drain well. Cover the jar with a lid, or transfer to a covered container.

Refrigerate to store.

Sprout Safety, Sprout Confidence.
Sprouts have been grown and eaten for over 44,000 years. They are a concentrated storehouse of phytochemicals which protect against disease. These mini vegetables are some of the healthiest and safest foods available today.
In 1995 there were 2 outbreaks of salmonella poisoning that were attributed to alfalfa sprouts. Both of these outbreaks were traced back to contaminated seed that was imported from the Netherlands. Consequently, sprouts received a lot of bad publicity and children and people with compromised immune systems were advised to avoid them. But, is there really cause for concern about the safety of sprouts? Let's look at the facts and put things in perspective. The cases of salmonella poisoning related to alfalfa sprouts amounted to 1/3 of 1% of all the cases of salmonella poisoning for that year. Ninety-three percent of all the cases of salmonella poisoning were attributed to meat. Seven percent resulted from shelfish, fresh fruits and vegetables. Is there any government agency telling you not to eat meat, shellfish or fruits and vegetables?
The protective measures that the FDA is taking to assure the safety of sprouts includes bleaching sprouting seeds to kill any contaminants and irradiating sprouting seeds. Irradiation of commercially grown sprouting seeds to reduce microbial pathogens has already been approved. But beware. The sprouts grown from these seeds are not required to be labeled as irradiated. Only organically grown seeds cannot be irradiated. So if you want to be sure not to purchase irradiated seeds, make sure you get organic ones.
Sprouts are safe for everyone. It's the way they are handled that could cause a problem. Those related to the salmonella outbreak were commercially grown. Organic seeds have never been implicated in a single case of salmonella poisoning. Certified organic seeds are handled in a manner that minimizes any possiblity of contamination. Choosing only organically grown sprouting seeds and growing your own sprouts will give you one of the safest, healthiest, most nutritious foods available anywhere.

FENUGREEK
Picture
Aloha,
Traditionally in the culinary world fenugreek seeds are being used in a wide range of culinary recipes. The seeds either in the forms of whole seeds, sprouted, powder, sauce or as paste used in a variety of spicy dishes in many parts of Middle-East, India, Mediterranean and Central Asian regions.  The seeds should be added in small quantities in food because they have strong aroma and bitter taste. Here are some serving tips Fenugreeks are used as an important ingredient in curry powder.Small quantity of sprouted seeds added to vegetables and lentils dishes.Fenugreek leaves, either fresh or dried are also favored in cooking with spinach, potato, carrots etc. Sprouted fenugreek seeds are used in salads, paste, dips, fillings etc. I strongly suggest this grain to women. The potential behind it for the feminine body is outstanding. It causes the female body to create natural peroxide in the "yoni" (vagina) to help keep this beautiful area alkaline and clean. It also is a great natural preventive source for menopause.
Picture
Fenugreek seeds are rich source of minerals, vitamins, and phytonutrients. The seeds are very good source of soluble dietary fiber. Soaking the seeds in water makes their outer coat soft and mucilaginous. 100 g of seeds provide 24.6 g or over 65% of dietary fiber. Non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) which constitute major fiber content in the fenugreeks include saponins, hemicelluloses, mucilage, tannin, andpectin. These compounds help lower blood LDL-cholesterol levels by inhibiting bile salts re-absorption in the colon. They also bind to toxins in the food and helps to protect the colon mucus membrane from cancers. NSPs (non-starch polysaccharides) increase the bulk of the food and augments bowel movements. Altogether, NSPs assist in smooth digestion and help relieve constipation ailments. It has been established that amino-acid4-hydroxy isoleucine present in the fenugreek seeds has facilitator action on insulin secretion. In addition, fiber in the seeds help lower rate of glucose absorption in the intestines thus controls blood sugar levels. The seeds are therefore recommended in diabetic diet. Fenugreek is an effective treatment for both type 1 and 2 diabetesThe seeds contain many phytochemical compounds such as choline, trigonelline diosgenin, yamogenin, gitogenin, tigogenin and neotigogens. Together, these compounds account for the medicinal properties of fenugreeks. This prized spice is an excellent source of minerals like copper, potassium, calcium, iron, selenium, zinc, manganese, and magnesium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps control heart rate and blood pressure by countering action on sodium. Ironis essential for red blood cell production and as a co-factor for cytochrome-oxidases enzymes. It is also rich in many vital vitamins including thiamin, pyridoxine (vit.B-6), folic acid, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin-A and vitamin-C that are essential nutrients for optimum health. It is a great skin anti inflamatory and stimulates uterine contractions and can be helpful to induce childbirth. Due to its estrogen-like properties, fenugreek has been found to help increase libido and lessen the effect of hot flashes and mood fluctuations that are common symptoms of menopause and PMS. It is a great menstrual reliever. Try it out.

Purslane - Ultimate Calcium source.

Purslane Mentalpeace Salad
Picture
Aloha,
Herbs are an abundant source of nutrition, you were always showed a basic food pyramid structure growing up and in this pyramid sceem there was no herb section for beneficial nutrition. Forever as man been present we used wisely and regularly. Herbs can replace  costly pills and supplements, and even some drugs. For example, if you currently  take fish oil capsules, omega-3 oil capsules, flax oil, or anti-depressants, a  switch to purslane could improve your health and save you lots of money, too.
Purslane is known as a beneficial juicy herb found as a weed throughout  the world, it can be found growing in your yard in one of your flower beds or even in a crack in the side-walk out front . Purslane
is commonly used as a potherb or as an ingredient for  salads.
Purslane has been recently identified as an excellent source of  alpha-linolenic acid. Alpha-linolenic is an omega-3 fatty acid, also known as  fish oil. This crucial content in Purslane herb plays an important role in human  growth, development and preventing diseases.
Moreover, this fatty acid cannot be  synthesized by humans and therefore has to be ingested. Purslane
herb is five times richer in omega-3 fatty acids  than spinach, and is high in vitamin C also.
It contains up to 4000 ppm of the omega-3 fatty-acid alpha linolenic acid  (ALA); that means a 100 gram serving (between 3 and 4 ounces) contains 400 mg of  ALA. Purslane-fed chickens lay eggs that have 20X more omega-3's than  regular eggs.
Eating purslane is tastier, safer, and more effective than taking  omega-3 supplements. To increase the effect use walnut oil to your purslane.
Picture
Purslane counters depression. It is one of the five herbs -- lettuce,  amaranth greens, lamb's quarters greens, and watercress are the other four --  richest in antidepressant substances. Purslane is a superior source of calcium,  magnesium, potassium, phenylalanine, and tryptophan, all of which are known to  moderate the effects of depressive brain chemicals. Purslane is loaded with nutrients. A single one-cup serving contains all the  vitamin E you need in a day, as well as significant amounts of vitamin C and  pro-vitamin A. Purslane is one of the very best sources of magnesium. One cup  supplies your minimum daily need of 450 mg. Lack of magnesium is associated with  diabetes, migraines, osteoporosis, hypertension, and asthma. One cup of fresh purslane gives you over 2000 mg of calcium and  8000 mg of potassium. Women who take calcium supplements do nothing to  strengthen their bones. Women who eat foods rich in calcium -- such as raw yogurt,  stinging nettles, coral, and purslane -- have flexible bones which resist breaking. Purslane is also a benefit for psoriasis. Herbs nourish, strengthen, and tonify. Try adding purslane, basil, and walnut oil in a dish. "Oshi!" That is a recipe for any "stinky meanie heads" out there. Prep them a bowl of that blend. You'll see that a transformation occured overnight by the next morning. In some instances within a digestive cycle. They just needed some tryptophan and omega-3s. You'll also be amazed that if you look in the mirror one morning and noticed that both your eyes were equallly opened, than you would be experiencing a proper amount of Omega Fatty Acids 3-6-9. Are both your eyes equally opened now? Just showing you how to utilize the potential of both hemisphere's of the brain together.
That's optimal thinking consciously.
Namaste.

Yacon – Jakon - Yakon
 (Polymnia sonchifolia syn. smallanthus sonchifolius)
Picture

Aloha,
I wanted to introduce you to a great sweetner alternative. I use it medicinally as a prebiotic to feed cultures. Yakon is an ideal addition to everyone's diet whether dieting or just maintaining a balanced healthy life style. It is especially suited to Diabetics. Yakon tubers harvested in late Autumn are sweet, crispy but have low calories due to the indigstable  long chain sugars  called Oligosaccharides and fructans. They also activate bifidobacteria, these are the good guys, and suppress putrefication in the bowels. Due to improvement of the gut microflora there is reducution in the content of cholesterol, triglycerides, fatty acids in the blood, and reduces blood sugar and blood pressure. Red Yakon also contains as much polyphenol as red wine. FYI, Raw Chocolate has 30% more than red wine. The roots contain potassium and the antioxidant vitamins A, C and E. Yacon syrup is glucose free and contains at least 30% fructooligosaccharides (FOS). FOS is a common prebiotic that aids digestion and helps to stimulate the colon. Prebiotics are the food for Probiotics. You can also find aloe as a prebiotic. FOS cannot be absorbed by the body which makes it naturally low in calories and low glycemic (some proponents of the syrup go so far as to say that yacon is non glycemic). Those sugars remaining in the plant that are not FOS are absorbed slowly into the bloodstream. There are many benefits to FOS supplementation, including better absorption of calcium and magnesium and it helps increase bone density. For this reason seniors with osteoporosis often take FOS supplements

Bifidobacterium - Probiotics

Bifidobacterium - "Probiotics"
Picture

Probiotics, "Bifidobacterium", are a natural part of the bacterial flora in the human body and have a symbiotic bacteria-host relationship with humans. Infact we are mostly bacterium.  Water, protein, fat, minerals, and bacteria all  make that beautiful body you use everyday as a vessel of life conscious experience. B. longum promotes good digestion, boosts the immune system, and produces lactic and acetic acid that controls intestinal pH. These bacteria also inhibit the growth of Candida albicans, E. coli, and a others. Bifidobacteria are considered as important probiotics and used in the food industry to relieve and treat many intestinal disorders. Bifidobacteria exert a range of beneficial health effects, including the regulation of intestinal microbial homeostasis, the inhibition of pathogens and harmful bacteria that colonize and/or infect the gut mucosa, the modulation of local and systemic immune responses, the repression of procarcinogenic enzymatic activities within the microbiota, the production of vitamins, and the bioconversion of a number of dietary compounds into bioactive molecules. These bifidobacterium ferment sugars to produce lactic acid within our intestines. The B. longum genome codes for many proteins specialized for the catabolism of oligosaccharides. This bacterium also is able to digest "nondigestible" plant polymers or host-derived glycoproteins and glycoconjugates giving it the ability to compete with other gastrointestinal bacteria and occupy a large percentage in the bacterial flora department.

Picture
Bifidobacterium infantis, B. brevi, and B. longum are the largest group of bacteria in the intestine of infants, Bifidobacteria are said to be only the 3rd or 4th largest group in adults (and comprise only 3-6% of adult fecal flora). The number of Bifidobacteria actually decline in the human body with age. In infants who are breast-fed, Bifidobacteria constitute about 90% of their intestinal bacteria. There is a lower and unhealthy number in infants feed baby formula and not breast milk. There is an indication of symptoms during development and after found withinh those babies (bodies) that weren't feed their natural nurishment. One thing that is not seen or done or talked much about is the ingestion of the placenta for the mother after birthing. This is seen and natural throughout all spieces on earth. Here we are without, with a slap in the ass hanging upside down and about 2 dozen vaccinations in the foot. There is reason for these animalistic behaviors and great health benefit behind consuming and nurishing the body with the appropriate god given, divine instruction of life. There are reports of leaky gut, IBS, eczema. psoriasis in those not consuming the natural source of bacteria after birth. When breast-fed infants' diets are changed to raw milk and solid food, the bifidobacterium are joined by rising numbers of other bacteria found in the human body such as Bacteroides and Streptococci lactobacilli. The lower number of Bifidobacteria in formula-fed babies might account for a higher risk of diarrhea and allergies that increase during the life span. Bifidobacterium produces lactic acid instead of gas like E. coli. People in general with more healthy balance of Bifidobacteria than other bacteria will have less gas and digestive problems. You will also see a big difference in your skin complextion and have a relief in symptom of psoriasis. Note that raw coconut water is close to being identical to mothers breast  milk. It contains 55% lactic acid and is a great baby formula supplement. It's even better than gatorade having 4 different electrolytes.

Probiotics can be found in fermented and raw dairy foods, especially yogurt. You can get them through fermented grains and veggies. Eating substances rich with these probiotics is a preventive maintenance remedy for diarrhea, vaginitis, and yeast infections because it promotes the growth of these micro organisms as opposed to other bacteria. B. infantis has been proven to dramatically reduce irritable bowel sydrome (IBS) in patients and if given alone can almost normalize the patient. Can I say Keifer Colostrum will help with (IBS) and if you are a vegam you can get the bio-K shots that are derived from rice. Please refuse soy. Your body will naturally love you more. Just remember "probiotics" in latin means; "for Life!" Aloha

Thyroid: Iodine deficiency in Vegan and Vegetarian Diets.

Thyroid Hyperactivity and Iodine Deficiency
Picture
Picture
Aloha,
Did you know Vegetarians may be at risk of iodine deficiency if they do not eat seafood or have an adequate diet.  Instead they can get their iodine from iodised table salt or seaweed. A study  published in Sep-Oct 2003 Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism showed that 25% of  the vegetarians, 80% of the vegans and 9% of those eating a mixed diet had low iodine status.
Remeber you want to eat fermented seaweed. You can eat regular sea vegetables and get iodine supplements, but the body will not absorb 100% of the potential due to our evolution. The value of dietary iodine can be reduced by vegetables from the brassica  family, which includes cabbage, brussels sprouts, raw turnip, broccoli, and  cauliflower. In circumstances where both large quantities of these foods are  eaten and the levels of dietary iodine are marginal, goitre could develop. The thyroid hormones regulate  the body's metabolic rate and promote growth and development throughout the  body, including the brain. If there isn't enough thyroid hormone circulating in  the blood, the brain sends a chemical message to the thyroid gland, which then  releases a measured dose of these hormones. If a person's diet is too low in  iodine, the brain keeps sending chemical messages to the thyroid in vain. In an  attempt to make more thyroid hormone, the gland gets larger and larger. This  overgrowth of the thyroid gland is called a goitre.

How much  iodine do we need
The receommended daily dietary intake of  iodine in Australia:
150  micrograms for men
120  micrograms for women (150 micrograms during pregnancy, 170 micrograms during  lacatation)
Children  70-150 micrograms
Infants  50-60 micrograms
Excessive amounts of iodine can also lead to goitre. This  has occurred where foods such as seaweeds, which are rich in iodine, are  commonly eaten. However, it is unlikely that any harmful effects would occur  with habitual intakes up to 300 micrograms per day.
One teaspoon of iodised salt  provides 150 micrograms of iodine
1 serve (100g) of seafood provides about 60 micrograms
100g of vegetables or meat or eggs  provides about 25 micrograms of iodine
100g of dairy products or bread/cereals provides about 10 micrograms.
Anyone on a low-salt diet should consider eating a serve of seafood every week to make sure their iodine levels are adequate, particularly pregnant women, as lack of iodine can retard normal development in their baby.
Vegetarians should get iodine from fermented seaweed.
