ASSIGNMENT # 6
2. Check out Backpacking Light, a gear review website specifically for gear that will lighten your load. They have three types of gear reviews that range from 600 words and 1 photo to 2500 words and 7 or more photos. Check out this site on how to specifically write a gear review for Backpacking Light.
3. Write 300 words reviewing your most favorite and indispensable piece of gear. Use both Stephen Regonold and the Backpacking Light tips for writing your own review. As Stephen Regenold suggest, its hard to have an opinion about a piece of gear unless you have "tested it to death." Please incorporate his 8 tips which includes a photo of your product. Put the review on your website.
4. Scourer the internet or your favorite magazines and come to class with examples of a well written and poorly written gear review. Were you compelled to buy or not buy a piece of gear? Do you regularly seek out product reviews before you buy a piece of gear? Be prepared to discuss their merits in class. Before our bike packing expedition to the Caucasus this last summer with the MOAEL grad students, I devoured Bikepacking.com, reading tons of reviews on bikes, specific gear, and how to pack. Checkout this great review on the Surly ECR.
Quest 4D 3 GTX boots
by Jeremiah Shattuck
Salomon is a French maker of reliable trekking footwear consistently producing great products, with everything from fairly traditional looking boots to orthotic support for flat footed outdoor enthusiasts. The 4D refers to Salomon's sole and chassis tech, which is designed for maximum stability and fatigue reduction. These boots allows you to walk days in flow with a smooth ride for all levels of terrain and distances backpacking. This is the 3rd iteration of its kind and the GTX means it was made with Gore-tex providing a waterproof yet breathable durable fabric. With the lace locker mechanism built into the lacing structure you’ll never have to worry about having to tie your boots again while trekking. Let's just say no more having to tie soggy wet laces trekking in the snow.
I personally put the Quest 4D 3 GTX boots to the test on a fourteen day trek in Nepal. After breaking in the boots 50 miles in about 2 weeks they were ready for the 100+ mile trek through the Upper Mustang Trail of the Himalayas. With having flatfeet I was able to make the journey in sheer comfort and no problems.
